Origin: Latin tingere (to wet, dye)

Usage Note

Tingere is an irregular verb of the second conjugation meaning to dye or tint fabric, hair, or surfaces. It takes avere as its auxiliary. The past participle is tinto (irregular). The reflexive tingersi i capelli means to dye one's hair. Do not confuse with dipingere (to paint) or colorare (to colour, used more broadly).

Examples

"Si è tinta i capelli di rosso."

She dyed her hair red.

Literal Translation

Herself is dyed the hair of red.
