Also means
waste residue
Usage Note
Scoria (plural scorie) refers to the waste residue left after smelting metal or burning fuel. In volcanology it also describes rough, porous volcanic rock. Figuratively, le scorie di un passato means 'the remnants of a past'. Do not confuse with the Spanish/Portuguese escoria — the Italian word has a similar meaning but the Italian form drops the initial e-.
Examples
"Le scorie nucleari devono essere smaltite con cura."
Natural Translation
Nuclear waste must be disposed of carefully.
