scorgere

to catch sight of

verb SKOR-jeh-reh Rare

Also means

to make out

Usage Note

Scorgere implies spotting something at a distance or with difficulty — a perception that requires effort, closer to 'to discern' or 'to make out' than the plain vedere ('to see'). It is irregular: past participle scorto, passato remoto scorsi/scorgesti/scorse. It takes avere as auxiliary. Use it when the act of seeing is partial or fleeting.

Examples

"Ho scorto una figura tra gli alberi."

Natural Translation

I caught sight of a figure among the trees.

Literal Translation

I-have glimpsed a figure among the trees.
