accecare

to blind

verb aht-cheh-KAH-reh Rare

Also means

to dazzle

Usage Note

Accecare takes avere as its auxiliary. Note the spelling: the c before -are is hard ('k'), but before -hi- it shifts: accechi (you blind), accechi lui — the h is inserted to preserve the hard 'k' sound before -e/-i. Figuratively, accecare means to blind someone with passion or rage (l'amore lo accecava).

Examples

"La luce del sole mi acceca gli occhi."

Natural Translation

The sunlight blinds my eyes.

Literal Translation

The light of-the sun me blinds the eyes.
