rivoltare

to revolt

verb ree-vol-TAH-reh Rare

Also means

to turn inside out

Usage Note

Rivoltare has two quite different meanings depending on context: it can mean 'to disgust or revolt' (mi rivolta = 'it revolts me') or literally 'to turn something over or inside out' (rivoltare un guanto = 'to turn a glove inside out'). The reflexive rivoltarsi means 'to rebel or revolt' (il popolo si rivoltò). Do not confuse with rivoltella (revolver), which is etymologically related but unrelated in modern usage.

Examples

"Quella scena mi ha rivoltato lo stomaco."

Natural Translation

That scene turned my stomach.

Literal Translation

That scene to-me turned the stomach.
