Addolorare means to cause grief or deep sorrow; the reflexive addolorarsi means to feel grieved oneself. It conjugates with avere when transitive ('quella notizia mi ha addolorato') and with essere in the reflexive. Addolorata (female form) is also a title of the Virgin Mary in Catholic tradition — Madonna Addolorata.
