Usage Note

Abbandono covers both physical desertion (abbandono del veicolo — vehicle abandonment) and emotional: senso di abbandono (feeling of abandonment). The phrase in stato di abbandono means in a state of neglect, commonly said of buildings. The legal term abbandono del domicilio coniugale (desertion of the marital home) was formerly grounds for separation.
