rimorso

remorse

noun ree-MOR-soh Rare

Origin: Latin remorsus, 'a biting back'

Usage Note

Rimorso is the noun for remorse or guilt felt after doing something wrong; it is typically used in the singular (sentire rimorso, essere tormentato dal rimorso). The plural i rimorsi exists but is less common. Do not confuse with rimorso (past participle of rimordere, to gnaw again) — the noun and participle are identical forms. The phrase senza rimorso means 'without remorse'.

Examples

"Sente un profondo rimorso per quello che ha fatto."

Natural Translation

He feels deep remorse for what he has done.
