raddoppiare
to double
verb rad-dop-PYAH-reh Less Common
Origin: From re- + doppiare (to double), from doppio (double)
Usage Note
Raddoppiare is transitive ('to double something') and can also be used intransitively to mean 'to double in size/amount': I prezzi sono raddoppiati ('Prices have doubled'). When intransitive it takes essere as auxiliary. The intensive prefix rad- (from re-) adds emphasis to the doubling.
Examples
"L'azienda ha raddoppiato i profitti quest'anno."
Natural Translation
The company doubled its profits this year.
