Usage Note
Ammasso denotes a large, often disordered accumulation of things or people. In astronomy it refers to a star cluster (ammasso stellare). In everyday speech un ammasso di roba means a pile of stuff. The related verb is ammassare (to heap up, to amass). Do not confuse with massa, which is the abstract quantity of matter or a crowd.
Examples
"Sul tavolo c'era un ammasso di carte."
Natural Translation
On the table there was a pile of papers.
