Aumentare can be both transitive (aumentare i prezzi — 'to raise prices') and intransitive (i prezzi aumentano — 'prices are rising'). As an intransitive it takes essere; as a transitive it takes avere. The opposite is diminuire. Common in economic and everyday contexts.
