innamorare

to fall in love

verb een-nah-moh-RAH-reh Rare

Origin: From in- + amore (love), from Latin amor.

Usage Note

Innamorare in its transitive form means 'to make someone fall in love'; the far more common reflexive innamorarsi (di qualcuno) means 'to fall in love (with someone)' and takes essere as its auxiliary. Si è innamorato di lei means 'he fell in love with her'. The adjective innamorato (in love) is widely used on its own.

Examples

"Si è innamorata di lui al primo sguardo."

Natural Translation

She fell in love with him at first sight.

Literal Translation

Herself is fallen in-love of him at the first glance.
