ammalare

to fall ill, to get sick

verb ahm-mah-LAH-reh Less Common

Usage Note

Ammalare is most commonly used reflexively — ammalarsi (to get sick): mi sono ammalato (I got sick). The auxiliary in compound tenses is essere for the reflexive. The non-reflexive transitive ammalare ('to make someone ill') is rare. The past participle ammalato also functions as an adjective: sono ammalato (I am ill).

Examples

"Mi sono ammalato la settimana scorsa."

Natural Translation

I got sick last week.

Literal Translation

Myself I-am sickened the week past.
