Usage Note
Ammalare is most commonly used reflexively — ammalarsi (to get sick): mi sono ammalato (I got sick). The auxiliary in compound tenses is essere for the reflexive. The non-reflexive transitive ammalare ('to make someone ill') is rare. The past participle ammalato also functions as an adjective: sono ammalato (I am ill).
Examples
