amico

friend

noun ah-MEE-koh Common

Origin: Latin amicus.

Usage Note

Amico has an irregular plural: amici (m), amiche (f) — the -c- hardens to -ch- before -e/-i to preserve the 'k' sound. The feminine singular is amica. The phrase fare amicizia means to become friends. Amico can also be used adjectivally (una nazione amica = a friendly nation).
