Affannoso derives from affanno (breathlessness, anxiety) and describes either physical breathlessness or a hectic, anxious state: una ricerca affannosa (a frantic search), respiro affannoso (laboured breathing). It agrees in gender and number: affannosa, affannosi, affannose. The adverb form is affannosamente.
