vivere

to live

verb vee-VEH-reh Common

Origin: Latin vivere

Also means

to experience

Usage Note

Vivere can take either avere or essere depending on usage: transitive (ho vissuto una bella esperienza = I lived a wonderful experience, with avere) vs. intransitive (sono vissuto a Roma per anni = I lived in Rome for years, with essere). The past participle is irregular: vissuto. Vivere also means 'to experience' intensely — vivere un momento = to live a moment.

Examples

"Vivo a Milano da tre anni."

I have been living in Milan for three years.

Literal Translation

I-live in Milan from three years
