vedere

to see

verb veh-DEH-reh Common

Origin: Latin videre (to see)

Also means

to meet; to understand

Usage Note

Vedere takes avere as its auxiliary — ho visto (I saw / I have seen). The past participle visto is irregular (not veduto, though that archaic form exists). Colloquially, ci vediamo! (see you!) is the standard Italian goodbye among friends, equivalent to 'see you later'. Vedere di + infinitive means 'to see to it that': vedi di arrivare puntuale (make sure you arrive on time).

Examples

"Vedo le montagne dalla finestra."

Natural Translation

I can see the mountains from the window.
