Trattenere is irregular like tenere: present trattengo, trattieni, trattiene… It takes avere when transitive (ha trattenuto il respiro, held his breath) and is used reflexively as trattenersi (to restrain oneself, to stay). Common idiom: trattenere il fiato (to hold one's breath).
