tintura
dye; tincture
noun teen-TOO-rah Rare
Origin: From Latin 'tinctura' (dyeing), from 'tingere' (to dye)

Usage Note
Tintura covers both the process and the substance: tintura per capelli is hair dye, while tintura di iodio is iodine tincture (a medicinal solution). In a pharmacy, tintura madre refers to a herbal mother tincture. Do not confuse with tintoria (dry-cleaner's or dye-works), which is where the service is performed.
