svanire

to vanish

verb zvah-NEE-reh Rare

Also means

to fade away

Usage Note

Svanire uses essere as its auxiliary, so the past participle agrees with the subject: è svanito (m), è svanita (f), sono svaniti (m pl). It describes disappearing gradually or fading from view or memory: il sogno è svanito ('the dream vanished'). Don't confuse with sparire (to disappear suddenly) — svanire implies a gradual fading.

Examples

"Il suo sorriso è svanito all'improvviso."

Natural Translation

Her smile vanished all of a sudden.

Literal Translation

The her smile is vanished at-the sudden.
