suora

nun

noun SWOH-rah Rare

Origin: From Latin soror, 'sister'.

Usage Note

Suora is the everyday word for a Catholic nun, used both as a common noun (la suora) and as a title of address before the name: Suora Maria. The masculine counterpart for a friar or monk is frate (Franciscan) or monaco. Do not confuse with sorella, which means 'sister' in the family sense (though they share the same Latin root).

Examples

"La suora insegnava italiano ai bambini."

Natural Translation

The nun taught Italian to the children.
