abbey

noun ahb-bah-TSEE-ah Rare

Origin: From Medieval Latin 'abbatia', from 'abbas' (abbot), ultimately from Aramaic 'abba' (father).

Usage Note

Abbazia denotes a monastic complex headed by an abbot or abbess — larger and more independent than a convento (convent/friary). Italy is rich in famous examples: l'Abbazia di Montecassino, l'Abbazia di Cluny (French but well known in Italian history). The word is always feminine. The plural is regular: abbazie.

Examples

"L'abbazia medievale domina la vallata."

Natural Translation
