sole

sun

noun SOH-leh Less Common

Origin: from Latin 'sol'

Usage Note

Sole is masculine despite ending in -e; the plural soli is rare since there is one sun. Prendere il sole is to sunbathe, and c'è il sole is how you say 'it's sunny'. The compliment sei un sole means 'you're a sweetheart'.

Examples

"Oggi c'è un bel sole."

Natural Translation

It's lovely and sunny today.

Literal Translation

Today there-is a beautiful sun.
