soda
soda; washing soda
noun SOH-dah Rare
Origin: From Medieval Latin 'soda', possibly from Arabic 'suwwad' (a saltwater plant used to make ash)
Also means
soda water
Usage Note
Soda in Italian most commonly refers to soda caustica (caustic soda / sodium hydroxide) in cleaning and industrial contexts, or to soda as a fizzy mixer in drinks (whisky e soda). It is less commonly used alone for a carbonated soft drink — Italians more often say bibita or acqua frizzante. Do not confuse with sodio (the element sodium).

"Aggiungi un po' di soda al bicchiere."
