acqua

water

noun AHK-kwah Common

Origin: Latin aqua, 'water'

Usage Note

Acqua is one of the most common Italian nouns. Note the -cq- spelling (geminate /kk/) which English-speakers often misspell. Acqua minerale naturale is still water; acqua frizzante or gassata is sparkling. The idiom acqua in bocca! ('water in your mouth!') means 'keep it secret!'

Examples

"Vorrei un bicchiere d'acqua, per favore."

Natural Translation

I would like a glass of water, please.
