Usage Note
Sconfitto functions both as a noun ('the defeated one') and as an adjective ('defeated'). As a noun it follows regular gender agreement: lo sconfitto / la sconfitta. It derives from the past participle of sconfiggere ('to defeat'), so you will also see it in compound tenses: l'esercito è stato sconfitto ('the army was defeated').
Examples
"Lo sconfitto lasciò il campo in silenzio."
Natural Translation
The defeated man left the field in silence.
