scappare

to escape

verb skahp-PAH-reh Rare

Also means

to run away

Usage Note

Scappare takes essere as its auxiliary (sono scappato, I escaped). It is more colloquial than fuggire and very common in speech. The reflexive idiom lasciarsi scappare means to let something slip — a chance or a remark — which is a false-friend trap for learners expecting a purely physical meaning.

Examples

"Il gatto è scappato dal giardino."

Natural Translation

The cat escaped from the garden.
