Origin: From Latin pavimentum (beaten floor), from pavire (to beat, tamp down).

pavement
Usage Note
Pavimento refers to the floor surface of a room or building — the material you walk on. Do not confuse with piano (floor/storey of a building, as in secondo piano = second floor) or soffitto (ceiling). When talking about outdoor paving, Italians use selciato or marciapiede (pavement/sidewalk). The plural is regular: i pavimenti.
Examples
"Il pavimento del salotto è di marmo."
Natural Translation
The living room floor is marble.
