partito
party (political)
noun par-TEE-toh Common
Origin: Past participle of partire, 'to divide, depart' — a group that has 'separated off'
Usage Note
Partito in Italian almost exclusively means a political party (il Partito Democratico). For a social party/celebration, Italians use festa or party (the English loanword). As an adjective partito also means 'gone, left' (past participle of partire), so context matters: è partito means 'he has left,' while è un partito means 'he is a (good) match/catch.'
Examples
"Ha votato per il suo partito preferito."
Natural Translation
She voted for her preferred party.
Literal Translation
She-has voted for the her party preferred.
