Usage Note

Osannare means to cheer someone enthusiastically, often in a crowd context — la folla lo osannava ('the crowd cheered him'). It retains a slightly elevated or literary register; in everyday Italian applaudire or acclamare are more neutral alternatives. It is transitive and takes avere as auxiliary.
