annuire
to nod, to nod in agreement
verb an-noo-EE-reh Rare
Origin: From Latin annuere (to nod assent), from ad- + nuere (to nod).
Usage Note
Annuire is an intransitive verb conjugated with avere — ha annuito ('he nodded'). It specifically means to nod in assent or acknowledgment, not to shake the head. The root nu- is the same as in English 'innuendo' (a hint by nodding). For a nod as a gesture without implied agreement, Italians may also use fare un cenno con la testa.
Examples
"Ha annuito in silenzio senza dire nulla."
Natural Translation
He nodded silently without saying anything.
