nascere

to be born

verb NAH-sheh-reh Common

Origin: From Latin nasci (to be born).

Usage Note

Nascere always takes essere in compound tenses, and the participle agrees with the subject: lei è nata a Milano. The past participle nato is also used as an adjective: un attore nato = a born actor. Do not confuse with nascondere (to hide).

Examples

"Sono nato a Napoli nel 1990."

Natural Translation

I was born in Naples in 1990.
