municipale

municipal, town

adjective moo-nee-chee-PAH-leh Rare

Origin: From Latin municipalis, relating to a municipium.

Usage Note

Municipale is invariable for gender (one form for m and f), taking only a plural municipali. It describes anything belonging to a comune (municipality): polizia municipale (local police, also called vigili urbani), biblioteca municipale (town library). Learners should not confuse the local polizia municipale with the national Polizia di Stato.

Examples

"La polizia municipale controlla il traffico in centro."

Natural Translation

The municipal police monitor traffic in the centre.
