militante

activist; militant

noun mee-lee-TAHN-teh Rare

Origin: Latin militans (serving as a soldier), from militare

Usage Note

Militante functions as both noun and adjective, and is invariable for gender (il militante, la militante; both masculine and feminine use the same form). The plural is militanti. In Italian political discourse it specifically denotes an active party member or activist, stronger than a mere simpatizzante (sympathizer).

Examples
