milione
million
noun mee-LYOH-neh Common
Origin: Old Italian milione, augmentative of mille (thousand)
Usage Note
Milione is masculine; plural milioni. It requires di before a noun when used as a quantifier: tre milioni di persone (three million people) — the di is mandatory, unlike with mille. Do not confuse with miliardo (billion, i.e. 10⁹). Un milione takes the indefinite article: un milione di euro.
Examples
"La città ha due milioni di abitanti."
Natural Translation
The city has two million inhabitants.
