Memoriale can refer to a physical monument (un memoriale ai caduti — 'a memorial to the fallen') or a written memoir/petition (il memoriale del prigioniero — 'the prisoner's written account'). It is masculine despite ending in -e, like many Italian nouns of Latin origin. Not to be confused with memoria ('memory').
