Usage Note
Mattino and mattina are near-synonyms; mattino is slightly more formal and often appears in set phrases like di buon mattino (early in the morning). Mattina is more common in everyday speech. Both differ from stamattina (this morning, adverb). Do not confuse with domani mattina (tomorrow morning).
