lavare

wash

verb lah-VAH-reh Less Common

Origin: from Latin lavare

Usage Note

Lavare is to wash something else; for washing yourself use the reflexive lavarsi, as in mi lavo le mani (I wash my hands). Note Italian uses the definite article, not a possessive, with body parts here.

Examples

"Devo lavare i piatti adesso."

Natural Translation

I have to wash the dishes now.

Literal Translation

I-must to-wash the dishes now.
