latte

milk

noun LAHT-teh Less Common

Origin: from Latin lac, lactis

Usage Note

Latte is masculine despite ending in -eil latte, never la latte. A common learner error is ordering a latte in Italy expecting a milky coffee: in Italy you must say caffè latte or simply latte macchiato; saying just latte gets you a glass of plain milk. The plural i latti exists but is rare (referring to types of milk).

Examples

"Ogni mattina bevo un bicchiere di latte."

Natural Translation

Every morning I drink a glass of milk.
