lasciare

to leave

verb lah-SHAH-reh Common

Also means

to let

Usage Note

Lasciare means both 'to leave (something/someone behind)' and 'to let/allow' — lasciami dormire (let me sleep). It differs from partire, which means 'to depart'; lasciare stresses what is left behind. The phrase lascia perdere (forget it, never mind) is extremely common in casual speech. Takes avere as auxiliary.

Examples

"Ha lasciato le chiavi sul tavolo."

Natural Translation

He left the keys on the table.
