italiano

Italian

adjective ee-tahl-YAH-noh Common

Usage Note

Italiano functions as both an adjective — la cucina italiana (Italian cuisine) — and a noun for a person (un italiano, una italiana) or the language. When referring to the language, the article is usually omitted after parlare: parlo italiano (I speak Italian), not parlo l'italiano. It inflects regularly: italiana, italiani, italiane.
