Usage Note

Impasto refers to any mixed, kneaded dough or paste — impasto per la pizza, impasto per il pane. In fine arts it also describes the thick application of paint (impasto pittorico), a technique where pigment is applied heavily. The verb is impastare. Plural: impasti.
