Usage Note
Emigrare means to leave one's country to settle elsewhere; immigrare is the opposite (to arrive). It takes essere as its auxiliary in compound tenses: è emigrato in America (he emigrated to America). The noun is emigrazione (emigration) and the agent noun emigrante (emigrant).
