connaturare

to make innate, to embed by nature

verb kohn-nah-too-RAH-reh Rare

Origin: Latin con- + natura (nature)

Usage Note

Connaturare means to make something an inherent or natural part of a person or thing — to embed it as if by nature. It is often used reflexively: connaturarsi con ('to become part of one's nature'). The past participle connaturato is more frequent than the verb itself: un vizio connaturato alla politica ('a vice inherent in politics'). It is a formal, literary word rarely used in everyday conversation.

Examples

"La curiosità sembra connaturata all'essere umano."

Natural Translation

Curiosity seems to be innate to human beings.
