concittadino

fellow citizen, compatriot

noun kohn-cheet-tah-DEE-noh Rare

Usage Note

Concittadino refers to someone from the same city or town, not just the same country — for that, compatriota is more precise. Politicians frequently address crowds as concittadini ('fellow citizens'). The feminine form is concittadina; the plural is concittadini (m) or concittadine (f).

Examples

"Il sindaco salutò i suoi concittadini."

Natural Translation

The mayor greeted his fellow citizens.
