Usage Note

Concistoro refers to the solemn assembly of Catholic cardinals convened by the Pope, either in public (concistoro pubblico) or private (concistoro segreto) session. Historically it also denoted councils of civil rulers. Outside ecclesiastical contexts it is rarely encountered in modern Italian.
