complimento
compliment
noun kom-plee-MEN-toh Rare
Origin: From Latin complementum (that which completes).
Usage Note
Complimento is most often seen in the plural: fare i complimenti means to pay compliments or to stand on ceremony. The phrase complimenti! on its own functions as 'well done!' or 'congratulations!' — a warm exclamation of praise. Beware: fare tanti complimenti can ironically suggest someone is being overly fussy or polite.
