Usage Note

Apartheid is a loanword used unchanged in Italian to refer to the South African racial segregation system (1948–1994) and by extension to any institutionalised racial separation. It is treated as masculine and invariable (l'apartheid, never pluralised). Pronounced close to the Afrikaans original, not italianised.
