vocazione

vocation

noun voh-kah-TSYOH-neh Rare

Origin: From Latin vocatio ('a calling'), from vocare ('to call').

Also means

calling

Usage Note

Vocazione implies an inner calling, often but not exclusively religious. In secular use it describes a strong natural aptitude: ha una vocazione per la musica ('she has a natural gift for music'). Do not confuse with voce ('voice') — they share a Latin root but are distinct words. The adjective is vocazionale ('vocational').

Examples
