Usage Note
Unghia refers to a human fingernail or toenail, and also to an animal's claw or talon. The plural unghie is regular. The expression difendersi con le unghie e con i denti (to fight tooth and nail, literally 'with nails and teeth') is a common idiom. Do not confuse with artiglio, which refers specifically to a predatory bird's talon or a large claw.
Examples
"Si è rotta un'unghia mentre lavava i piatti."
Natural Translation
She broke a fingernail while washing the dishes.
